You don’t have to be a dedicated outdoors enthusiast to appreciate Michigan’s natural splendor. Our sprawling state is home to some of the most magical natural attractions imaginable, whether you’re partial to hiking, cross-country skiing, beachcombing, swimming, or simply relaxing and embracing fresh breezes. One heavenly park in Michigan is home to a little something for everyone, so add it to your bucket list.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park is located 138th Street in Allegan County, tucked away between the quaint waterfront town of Saugatuck and the larger, more bustling northward shoreline city of Holland.
While you might know that Michigan’s western shore is home to plenty of charming outdoor attractions, we think Saugatuck Dunes State Park deserves an extra look. This spot is truly like a little slice of heaven.
When you arrive at the approximately 1,000-acre natural gem, you’ll immediately be enamored. From recreational opportunities to slices of history and everything in between, there’s plenty to appreciate.
Of course, at the heart of the park are its beautiful dunes and its prime access to Lake Michigan. In total, there are two and a half miles of waterfront space here for strolling, sunbathing, splashing, and more.
Stretch your legs along an impressive 13 miles of trails throughout the park, which retain their beauty in all four seasons. These walkways will take you through forests, up and down dunes, and to the water.
As if that weren’t enough, there’s a designated space within the state park known as the Patty Birkholz Natural Area. This 300-acre zone boasts access to endangered plant species and a true sense of serenity.
If history is more your thing, venture to the adjacent Felt Estate where you’ll find a stunning 1920s mansion, chapel, and more. This one-of-a-kind locale can even be rented for weddings and other special events.
Whether you’re playing disc golf at the neighboring Shore Acres Township Park or relaxing along the shoreline, one thing is for sure: there’s magic around every bend at Saugatuck Dunes State Park.
